Shell House Camber Sands

Amelia Bouquet and Emilie Bausager (Bausager & Bouquet) were commissioned to design both the front and rear gardens of this property in Camber Sands.

Camber Sands has a singular atmosphere, where exposed coastal conditions of strong winds, shifting sands, sea spray and intense sun meet the whimsical and often artistic expression of the surrounding houses.

The design uses resilient plants and robust materials. Drawing inspiration from local cultural history - notably the playful shell-decorating traditions of artist Edwin Sutton and Derek Jarmon's Prospect Cottage - the gardens incorporate sculptural features made from shells sourced from a local fish mongers.
